Standing out with its environmentally friendly implementations, Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport upgraded from mapping to reduction level in ACI Europe Carbon Accreditation Program.

Operated by TAV Airports, Turkey’s leading global brand in airport operations, Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport has been certified for its works on reducing carbon emission.

Adnan Menderes raised to the second level in Airport Carbon Accreditation program, which was initiated by Airport Council International (ACI) Europe, the main organization of the airport operators. Reducing the carbon emission by almost 2 per cent to 6,600 tons in 2012 compared to previous year, Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport also participates in the "Green Airport" project of the General Directorate of Civil Aviation.

These developments show us that our traditional work processes are not sustainable in the medium and long term periods and that we need to change our life styles and the way we do business if we want to survive as societies and corporations. Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport has shown a great deal of efforts to have a leading role in this context since it was established. We have many ongoing projects to reduce the carbon footprints of our operations at the airport. We are also very glad that the results of these efforts gained recognition at international standards. We will keep on working to reduce our environmental impacts to minimum levels while increasing customer satisfaction and service quality."

New Terminal

Being awarded as the “Most Environmentally Friendly European Airport” for its International Terminal, Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport's new domestic terminal, which will be put into service during the first quarter of 2014, has also been designed to serve the same purpose.

While the rainwater harvesting systems, gray water reuse system, PV photovoltaic solar systems and trigeneration plant of the new terminal optimize energy consumption and water usage, waste management will also be performed efficiently.

Having recycled or reused 99 per cent of the waste generated during the demolishing of the old terminal, TAV received the “Innovative Sustainability Practices” award presented for the first time by Sustainable Development Association (SKD) with this project.

Airports act in unison

Airport Carbon Accreditation program was introduced in 2009. Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport became a leader in the sector within this context and was the second airport of Europe which got accredited in 2009.

As of 2013, 90 airports participating in the program represents 22 per cent of world's passenger traffic. Four years after the initiation of the program, totally more than 170,000 tons of carbon emission was reduced. This amount equals to the amount of carbon emitted by the power consumption of almost 71,000 houses in one year.

In addition to Izmir, Istanbul Atatürk Airport qualified for reduction stage and Ankara Esenboğa Airport qualified for mapping stage of the program.
