What is SMS?

What is SMS?

Safety management system is a management system that enables us to define the dangers occurring during our activities, calculate the risks, reduce these risks to an acceptable level by implementing necessary improvement work, and constantly monitor and improve the safety performance. (SHGM/SMM/6.5)

Management of safety risks is the basic requirement in the aviation sector.

Continuous improvement of the safety in aviation and development of the services we offer can only be viable when our stakeholders are responsive towards the safety issue.

The SMS requirements that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) introduced to the entire aviation sector with its Safety Management System Manual 9859-AN/474, were compiled under one document (Annex-19) which came into effect in 2013.

On a national scale; establishing and implementing an SMS became a legal requirement for organizations following the regulation by the General Directorate of Civil Aviation which was published in Official Gazette issue no. 28172 dated 13.01.2013, and the Civil Aviation Instruction (SHT, SMS/HAD) coming into effect.
